In order to avoid getting lost, humans have put in a lot of effort. They have erected immortal landmarks, painstakingly drawn detailed maps, and learned to see the stars in the night sky... Nevertheless, precise positioning was still a big challenge in the past.
However, things have become much simpler today. Just open the navigation system on your phone and it will tell you your exact location. It can also guide you, planning your route and guiding us to our destination, which is one of the coolest features of modern smartphones. Is it because smartphones are too smart? Actually, it's because they have GPS receivers installed inside their bodies.
GPS, also known as Global Positioning System, is a global satellite navigation and positioning system developed by the United States. At present, China also has its own satellite positioning system, called the Beidou Satellite Navigation System. In addition, the European Union and Russia also have their own positioning systems. Firstly, satellites know their accurate location information. They emit signals that are intercepted by the GPS receiver on the phone. Based on the arrival time of the information, the receiver can know the distance between the satellite and you and calculate your position accordingly.
Why can we calculate your position by knowing the distance between the satellite and you? For example, you don't know your location, but you know where classmate A is, and you know he is somewhere 10 meters away from you. So, on a circle with A as the center and a radius of 10 meters, it is possible that you are located.
In theory, intercepting signals from any three satellites can determine your location. Imagine standing somewhere on Earth with three satellites A, B, and C above your head. If you know the distance between you and satellite A, then you must be somewhere in the red circle of A. If you also know the "red circle" range of satellite B and satellite C, then the intersection of the three circles is your position. This is the positioning principle of a GPS receiver, but it actually uses overlapping spheres instead of circles
