In 1957, Sputnik satellite was launched by the Soviet Union, which was the first artificial satellite in human history. 　　In the 1960s and 1970s, the United States and the Soviet Union began to study the use of military satellites for navigation purposes, and in 1974, the military integrated GPS, which we now know as the Navstar system.

　　Since the late 1980s, all commercial use of the Navstar system has been the responsibility of the U.S. Coast Guard. GPS is now integrated with the ground-based LORAN and OMEGA radio navigation systems as part of the National Navigation Information Service.
