In 1957, Sputnik satellite was launched by the Soviet Union, which was the first artificial satellite in human history. In the Second World War, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Radio Laboratory successfully developed a precision navigation system, which was based on the radio base station on land. To calculate the radio wavelength and the arrival time of the radio wave and calculate their position by triangulation method, with the technology of that time, although the error reached more than one kilometer, but it was quite widely used at that time.

　　When the Soviet Union successfully launched the first satellite, Johns Hopkins University (sity) showed that it was possible to determine individual satellite orbit parameters from the Dubler movement of the satellite's radio signals, although this was only a small logical step forward. But if we can get the parameters of the satellite's orbit, then we can calculate its position on the Earth.

　　In the 1960s and 1970s, the United States and the Soviet Union began to study the use of military satellites for navigation purposes, and in 1974, the military integrated GPS, which we now know as the Navstar system.

　　Since the late 1980s, all commercial use of the Navstar system has been the responsibility of the U.S. Coast Guard. GPS is now integrated with the ground-based LORAN and OMEGA radio navigation systems as part of the National Navigation Information Service.
