A unique software-based GPS scheme that upgrades GPS/GalileoGa without hardware modifications. Similar to the Global Positioning System (GPS), Galileo is a European navigation system being developed by the European Space Agency. It is expected to be fully operational within a few years. The addition of the Galileo navigation system to the GPS satellite system will result in a significant performance improvement compared to a GPS-only system. Because the automotive market has a long design cycle, manufacturers are now actively preparing for the application of this new technology. The GPS/Galileo(GNSS) technology utilizes the system's main processor to perform the required GNSS positioning calculations without the need for expensive and bulky baseband ics. Therefore, the entire hardware bill of material of GNSS is reduced to only RF front-end circuit. FIG. 2 shows the block diagram comparing the traditional GPS scheme with the new software-based GPS scheme.
