The Beidou Navigation System is an important infrastructure for China's satellite navigation industry, aiming to break the monopoly of the satellite positioning and navigation application market dominated by the US GPS. It can be widely used in sea, land and air transportation, wired and wireless communications, geological exploration, resource survey, forest fire prevention, medical first aid, maritime search and rescue, precision measurement, target monitoring and other fields.

　　The Beidou Navigation System has successfully launched five geostationary satellites, which can cover China and neighboring regions. According to the plan, China will complete another 30 non-stationary orbit satellites by 2012, and 35 satellites will together form a network with global coverage.

However, the Beidou Generation works both ways, allowing users to know where they are and others to know where they are. This brings great convenience to desert and sea rescue." Mr Schley said.

　　The project was originally commissioned by the General Armament Department and has so far been mostly used for exploration or military purposes. But Liu Yifei said early mass production for civilian use is the ultimate goal.
