GPS updates its coordinate information once a second, so it can record its own motion trajectory. Generally, GPS can record more than 1024 footprint points and display the movement trajectory at an adjustable scale on a dedicated page. There are two methods for sampling footprint points: automatic and timed. The sampling method for footprint points is automatically determined by GPS, which generally only records directional turning points and does not record points during long-distance straight walking; Timed sampling can specify sampling time intervals, such as 30 seconds, one minute, 5 minutes, or other times, with a footprint point recorded every such long time. On the footprint line page, you can clearly see the horizontal projection of your own footsteps. You can start recording, stop recording, set methods, or clear footstep lines. The points on the "Footprint" line have no names and cannot be referenced separately. To view their coordinates, they are mainly used for drawing road maps (computer download routes?) and "backtracking" functions. Many GPS systems have a function called 'Trace back', which converts the footprint line into a 'ROUTE'. The selection of waypoints is done by the GPS internal program, usually selecting large turning points on the footprint line.

It should be noted that the backtracking function usually places the backtracking route into a default route (such as route0). Please refer to your GPS manual and check if there is data on this route before using it. If there is, use the copy function to copy it to another empty route to avoid overwriting. Each waypoint on the backtracking route uses the system's default temporary name, such as "T001". Some GPS will reuse these names when determining the second backtracking route. Even if you have already copied the old route, the route will be changed because the name referenced by the waypoint is reused, not the original backtracking route. Please review your GPS user manual and try it out to clarify your situation. If necessary, for TraceBack routes that need to be saved for a long time, copy them to the idle route and rename all waypoint names.
