The so-called GPS, also known as the Global Positioning System (GPS), is the world's first global satellite navigation system. As early as the 1970s, the United States began research and development. After nearly 20 years of research and development, it cost $20 billion and was finally fully completed in 1994.
The positioning principle of GPS is not difficult, it is actually the triangulation method. Simply put, it is to determine the position of the receiver by measuring the distance between the satellite and the receiver at different positions. Generally speaking, a receiver needs to be able to directly contact at least 4 GPS satellites at any time to accurately determine its position; If there are only three satellites, then it is impossible to determine the altitude; If there are only two, then the exact position cannot be calculated.
Due to limitations in working principles, there is also a lower limit for the number of satellites in the global satellite navigation system. Taking GPS in the United States as an example, at least 24 satellites need to operate normally in orbit to ensure that the vast majority of the Earth can "see" four GPS satellites at any time, thus achieving precise positioning.
According to different requirements and purposes, the global satellite navigation system may also have more than 24 satellites. For example, backup satellites or satellites in other orbits, etc
