　　The European Space Agency (ESA) has initiated a solicitation proposal to showcase the functionality of new 5G cellular networks supporting positioning and timing applications to supplement satellite navigation, just like smartphones today use cellular data to support their positioning services.

　　5G will bring higher speed, greater traffic capacity, and ultra-low latency (or signal delay) communication. But 5G will also bring a series of new possibilities for positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT).

　　The 5G network will allow for new measurements on base stations and user receivers through advanced antennas and new positioning signals at higher frequencies. 5G networks will also bring enhanced connectivity to improve cloud based positioning applications and value-added services. Although satellite navigation works best in outdoor environments with broad sky views, 5G PNT has the potential to bring PNT to the depths of the "urban canyon" in high-rise city centers, and even to indoor warehouses where 5G networks are deployed.

　　The combination of satellite navigation and 5G brings a commitment to high-performance, safe, and resilient PNT services, as well as seamless application of PNT applications from outdoor to indoor environments, and from rural to urban areas.

　　With the collection of new ideas from ESA, the agency is inviting proposals to implement pilot projects to demonstrate the feasibility of 5G PNT solutions in many use cases
