For more than 20 years, the United States has been continuously promoting modernization plans, investing over $20 billion in major investments. The main goal is to improve the level of satellite and ground operations control in the space segment, separate civilian signals, and enhance military performance while increasing civilian signals from 1 to 4. In addition to retaining the C/A code civilian signals on the L1 frequency point, civilian L1C and L2C codes have been added to the original L1 and L2 frequency points, The addition of L5 frequency civilian signals greatly increases the redundancy of civilian signals, thereby improving the positioning accuracy, signal availability and integrity, service continuity, and wireless interference resistance of the system; It also facilitates high-precision real-time kinematic (RTK) measurements and applications on long and short baselines, as well as applications in precision approach and landing of aircraft, surveying, precision agriculture, mechanical control, and civil indoor enhancement, as well as earth science research.
GPS modernization is a systematic task that includes: space satellite segment, ground operation control segment, new operational control system (OCX), and user equipment segment modernization. Its core is to increase the number of L5 frequency points and civilian signals, change the format, and achieve interoperability with other GNSS signals. The last GPSIIIF is expected to be launched in 2034, marking the end of the GPS modernization process
